Possible Effects Of Cerebral Palsy or CP on A Person’s Sexuality (05/04/2004) by Unknown
Having cerebral palsy has no physical effect on sexual desire. Genital
arousal and erectile function are usually not directly affected. What may
effect sexual desire for the person with CP. are the for the most part
negative sociocultural attitudes toward sexuality and disability and the
cultural ideals of attractiveness that currently hold sway. When people are
given the message that they are not sexual or attractive, this can
sometimes have an effect on their sexual desires.
The ability to engage in sexual relations implies a lot. Sexual relations
begin with finding someone to have relations with. A sometimes
discouraging task for the person with CP. in a society that routinely
asexualizes them. But certainly not hopeless.
A study conducted by Russell Shuttleworth, MA, MSW of the search for
sexual intimacy for 14 men with moderate to severe CP. found that most of
them have had sexual relationships with others or currently are in a
relationship. Russell also interviewed some of women that are involved
with these men. They definitely see them as sexually desirable.
Communication is an ability that some people disabled or non-disabled
can have trouble with. Communication is essential in the building of a
relationship. Then of course there is the physical dimension--kissing,
holding hands, sexual positioning, etc. Cerebral palsy can limit some
physical aspects of a sexual relationship. Yet, some men in the study said
that this spurred their creativity in sex, which was positively viewed by
their partners. Communication around your limitations and an openness by
you and your partner to creatively experiment are invaluable to a healthy
sexual relationship. This article appears in the following topics:
