Disability and Parenting
(05/04/2004)

by Unknown

Regardless of how you get a baby, if you want to be an active parent, you can. An occupational therapist can help you choose the adaptive equipment (accessible cribs, changing tables, carrying slings, etc.) you may need. If you are already a parent of a child who can manage their own personal care, you can still play an active role in parenting your child giving love, support, and direction and finding mutual ways to have fun together.

For more information on parenting visit Through the Looking Glass or Parents With Disabilities(Former Diana Michelle's Home Page) (see links on the right of this page). Through the Looking Glass is a community non-profit organization which emerged from the disability independent living movement in 1982. TLG has pioneered clinical and supportive services, training and research serving families in which one or more members - whether parent or child - has a disability or medical issue.

TLG's mission has been to create, demonstrate and encourage resources and model early intervention services which are non-pathalogical and empowering. Diana Michelle's Home Page was set up by Diana Michelle's parents. Her mom has a disability. Together with Diana's father they share the resources that they found for making baby and child care accessible for parents with disabilities. The site includes acess to an e-mail chat group.
