Someone I care about just came out to me! What do I do now?
(05/04/2004)

by Blaise Parker

PFLAG has an excellent list of Dos and Don'ts for the families and friends of gay, lesbian and bisexual people. They also have some great coming out resources. Personally, my first advice would be to support the loved one and to find a counselor or therapist with whom you can work through your own issues. Also look into support groups of your own such as PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). Remember, gay, lesbian and bisexual youth (and adults) are at a higher risk for suicide and victimization. Please consider your actions carefully. Coming out is a frightening thing for many people, and it takes an enormous amount of trust.
