About the Authors of Sex Matter for Women
(05/04/2004)

by Sallie Foley, MSW, Sally A. Kope, MSW, Dennis P. Sugrue, PhD

Sally Foley, MSW, is a Senior Clinical Social Worker at the University of Michigan Medical Center and Adjunct Professor at the U. M. School of Social work. She is a certified sex therapist, educator, and supervisor, and an award-winning teacher and frequent lecturer on human sexuality.

Areas of specialization: “When I first started working as a social worker in a medical center, my first client vulva removal; my second client penis removal; my third client incest survivor. It became clear that there are a lot of losses in life for which people don't bring over a casserole. I work a lot with people who are recovering from major medical and personal traumas, including sexual abuse. I also work as a sex educator to try to get women to be sex-positive. Like the soccer mom who is sorting socks at 10 p.m., I’m interested in giving those women a means to know that ‘sex matters to me.’”

Sally A. Kope, MSW, is a certified sex therapist, educator, and supervisor, and a couple counselor in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She serves on the faculty of the University of Michigan Medical School. She has written and lectured widely, including in the media; she has appeared on the Phil Donahue Show as well as other media in Michigan.

Areas of specialization: “I work a lot with sexual pain. It is one of the things that women cite when they come for help. We didn't used to talk about it, but now it has become identified as a major factor in sexual problems. I’m involved with the medical issues related to sexuality, disability. I became involved with sexuality and the developmentally disabled; and I also work with sexual abuse survivors. I also do a lot of work with infertility. It is amazing the terms they used to use for infertility: “incompetent cervix. Hostile mucous.” With all this baggage, and all the pressures, sex is going to be affected in infertility. The other area I work with is substance abuse. Sexuality just can't escape being influenced by this problem. With the aging of the baby boomer generation, sex in retirement has also become an issue I treat.”

Dennis P. Sugrue, PhD, a clinical psychologist and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School, is the current President of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Dr. Sugrue is an expert in human sexuality who has been featured in media including Ladies Home Journal, Parents, and Glamour.

Areas of specialization: “I have really valued educating men and women about what they need to know about the other’s sexuality—and I work a lot on issues of healthy sexuality, and I treat the range of sexual disorders around desire, performance, pain. I’ve worked in the public arena, too, for example being an expert for the American Civil Liberties Union regarding ‘sexual compulsions.’ So I’ve also been involved with gender disorders, and compulsive and criminal sexual behaviors.”
