Love and Relationships: Age-related Changes Age-related Changes Introduction:
Everyone grows older. As we age, our bodies go through a variety of changes, many of which can affect our sexual behaviors and relationships. At the same time, however, aging does not necessarily mean that our desire for and interest in sexual relationships has to diminish. Research shows that sexual relationships and behaviors continue far beyond age 60, and that a healthy sex life contributes to psychological and physical well-being. Factors addressed in this channel include making sure that older adults advocate for themselves with medical professionals around sexuality issues (for example, asking explicitly whether a medication has any sexual side effects, and if so, what alternatives may be available). Also included is information about overcoming obstacles to sexual behaviors and/or pleasure that the body’s natural aging process may create so that age is not seen as a barrier to having a satisfying, healthy sex life.
