Gender Diversity Introduction:
When babies are born, the first question asked is usually, “Is it a boy or a girl?” Once the biological sex is identified, a child begins to receive lifelong, clear messages about how she or he is supposed to behave based on whether she or he is male or female. This binary concept of gender – male vs. female – is, however, insufficient to understand the full spectrum of gender identity and expression. Some people identify as transgender or simply “trans,” an umbrella term to describe people whose gender expression and/or identity do not necessarily match or conform to what their biology dictates. Under that umbrella may be someone who is intersex (a person whose genitalia or chromosomal composition is unique from an XX female or an XY male), a transsexual person (someone of one biological sex who partially or completely alters their body to a different sex in order to reflect their gender identity), and many others whose experience, expression, and/or identity is beyond the binary male-female structure.
