Sexual Health eBook Volume4 Chapter 11Sexually Transmitted Infections, Raven JamesIn this chapter, a variety of sexually transmitted infections (STIs, formerly
known as sexually transmitted diseases [STDs]) are discussed. The shift in
terminology to STI resulted from the mind-set that many of these infections
are not diseases, and that the term infection more accurately and
inclusively describes their etiology. STI will be the terminology
used in this chapter. The United States has the highest rate of STIs of any
industrialized nation. Sexually active youth in the United States account for
about half of all the new cases of annual infections. More than half of all
Americans will get a STI at some point in their lifetime (American Social Health
Association [ASHA], 2005).
STIs have been in existence for centuries. Some of these infections are curable
(bacterial); others are not (viral). With the growing rates of STIs and emergence
of new types of viral infections over the last few decades, the implications
for treatment and prevention of STIs have become more complex and frustrating
for educators and providers alike.
Most individuals will present with sexual risk and infection over the course
of their lives. The information presented here is intended to assist readers
in making informed decisions about sexual choices they are likely to encounter
and in talking to sexual partners about STIs, testing and prevention. This
important process of knowledge and intervention is crucial for initiating,
developing and maintaining healthy relationships and lifestyles. Sexual Health eBook Volume4 Chapter 11 $20 http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/netcart.asp?MerchantID=104436&ProductID=3537205
