Sexual Health eBook Volume4
Chapter 5

Women’s Sexual Problems and Concerns, Carol Rinkleib Ellison

What is a sexual problem? Who defines it? Might what is labeled a “problem” sometimes be only a “concern,” or even regarded as “just how it is”? Beliefs about doing sex and how we conceptualize and describe sexual problems and therapy issues shape how individuals experience them in their lives and how clinicians treat them.

In this chapter, I will discuss some of the cultural beliefs that lead to perceived sexual problems. I will provide examples from the research that underlies my book Women’s Sexualities: Generations of Women Share Intimate Secrets of Sexual Self-Acceptance.
