Stanley Ducharme

Biography: Dr. Stan Ducharme is a clinical psychologist and certified sex therapist practicing in the Boston area. He is affiliated with Boston University Medical Center and is a member of the medical staff at Boston Medical Center. In addition, he is a Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine and Assistant Professor of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Ducharme has been working in the area of disability for over 25 years with individuals who have spinal cord injury, head trauma and other neurological disabilities. Early in his career in established the Sexuality and Disability Training Center at Boston University where he and his staff conducted SAR workshops and trainined other professionals in the area of sexuality and disability. He is actively involved in the disability community in Boston and has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of The Boston Center for Independent Living. Currently, Dr. Ducharme conducts frequent workshops and consults on issues of sexuality to a variety of independent living programs, hospitals and rehabilitation centers. As a sex therapist, he works with men, women and couples who have a variety of sexual difficulties. Many of the people he works with have physical disabilities although his practice also serves people without disabilities as well. His clinical orientation is a cognitive behavioral approach that may involve homework assignments and skill building. He is available for a one time consultation as well as for ongoing therapy to address specific problems. He can also be of assistance in helping to locate specific resources in the greater New Engalnd area. Dr. Ducharme is involved in many organizations in the rehabilitation and sexuality fields. He contributes columns on sexuality and disability for the Paralyzed Veteran's of America and has written a handbook on sexuality and spinal cord injury. For the past 12 years, he has served as editor of the Journal of Sexuality and Diability and frequently writes and lectures on topics related to disability, sexual functioning, and psychosocial aspects of adjustment.
