Question:
I take care of a teen that is autistic, he does not speak or understand a lot of verbals. He is 15 and has recently been going through puberty. He continually has erections throughout the day and hasn't figured out how to masterbate. Do you think he will figure it out on his own or should we intervene? I was also wondering if you knew of any videos or books to explain to this teen about sex and masterbation that he would understand?

Now is the perfect time for a basic sex education. Contact a Family Planning or Sexual Education Center in your area (try in the telephone book) for some free advice, some even send free materials. They may recommend some good texts. The book I use for my two autistic children is called 'How Sex Works' by Elizabeth Fenwick and Richard Walker. A quick check of the current material on offer through Amazon shows a lot of titles. You can purchases these listed books easily online. If your budget doesn't stretch to book purchase, make note of titles that sound appropriate and borrow them from the library. Of the 1225 titles relating to sexual education, these titles sounded worthwhile: The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality : An Essential Handbook for Today's Teens & Parents by Michael J. Basso (April 1997) Beyond the Birds and the Bees : Fostering Your Child's Healthy Sexual Development by Beverly Engel (Paperback - December 1997) Asking About Sex and Growing Up : A Question-And-Answer Book for Boys and Girls by Joanna Cole, Alan Tiegreen(Illustrator) (Paperback - May 1988) The Teenage Human Body Operator's Manual by Lee White, Caesar Pacifici, Mary Ditson, Mike Novotny (Illustrator)(September 1998) Dear Michael : Sexuality Education for Boys Ages 11-17 by Cynthia G. Akagi (Paperback -September 1996) Dr. Ruth Talksto Kids : Where You Came From, How Your Body Changes, and What Sex Is All About by Diane Degroat(Illustrator), et al (Paperback - May 1998) Changing Bodies,Changing Lives : A Book for Teens on Sex and Relationships by Ruth Bell 3rd Rev edition (September 1998) Audio Download: From Audible.com: Educacion Sexual (Sex Education) by Fortuna Calvo(Author); Audio Download running time: 1 hour by Fortuna Calvo(Author) Please feel free to ask any further questions, and thank you for coming to The Sexual Health Network Melissa BEE
