Question:
Dear Dr. Owens I had direct Inguinal Hernia repair a week and a half ago. About 5 days after surgery I masturbated and then just 3 days ago my wife brought me to orgasm orally. Yesterday I masturbated twice. I am normally a very horny guy, but it seems like because I shouldn't be doing this I want it even more. My doctor today told me no sex for at least another 3 weeks. I am hoping I didn't do any harm, and was embarrassed to tell the doctor. My orgasms were the type where I just let the ejaculate run out and never had any sort of pain or discomfort. What is your opinion on this? I know I should be just abstaining on this.

It is completely up to you whether you want to follow you doctor's advice or not. Your physician tells you not to masturbate or have sex for a good reason. It is important not to put any stress on the body parts where you just had surgery in order to allow full healing to take place. Your physician is the best person to tell you what is best for you in this particular situation and you know what the message was. I would encourage you to ask your doctor to be more specific about what you can and what you cannot do. Rigorous intercourse is very different from gentle masturbation. There is nothing wrong with calling your doctor and asking for some more clarification. All the best, Annette Owens, MD PhD
