Question:
I am an 18 year old female that just recently moved miles away from home in order to attend college. I am residing in the campus dorms with the rest of the female freshmen. These first few weeks of college have been extremely stressful and caused me to be perpetually homesick. I miss my boyfriend, friends, and family, although I travel home every weekend in order to be with them. Also, I am in an area that was affected by Hurricane Katrina.

One weekend while visiting home, my boyfriend and I engaged in some intimate activities. After it was over, we immediately were scared that he might have had some pre-cum on his fingers when he fingered me, although he's not sure. There are several other factors that are in question, like if he touched the blanket before he did me, if when he went to the restroom if it flushed any sperm out of his system, or what have you. I know there is a possibility of become pregnant if sperm comes into contact with the vagina without any sort of penetration - but what are the chances of this happening in my particular situation?

What has also caused concern is that I haven't had my period this month (and can't even remember if I had it last month - lots of chaos), although I have not had sex with my boyfriend and done nothing more than mutual masturbation. Do you think that this could be caused from the stress related to college life and the Hurricane Katrina, or do you think I should be concerned about pregnancy?

Hi, and thanks for your question. I can understand why this might be scaring you, and causing you some worry, but you really have nothing to be worried about. In order for you to get pregnant sperm from your boyfriend would need to get inside your vagina, travel through your cervix to your uterus, and then travel down one of your fallopian tubes to find an egg waiting to be fertilized. While it's possible that pregnancy can happen from precum if there is any sperm in the guy's precum, the chances are pretty low.

A guy ejaculates hundreds of millions of sperm during an orgasm, but only about 50 actually make the full trip to the egg (if an egg is present). Becoming pregnant from mutual masturbation is possible, but it would be really, really hard to pull off. The best chance of it happening would be if your boyfriend had freshly ejaculated semen on his hands, and then immediately put his fingers into the back of your vagina to deposit the semen there. You're much less likely to get pregnant if there may have been precum on his fingers, and if more time than a few minutes went by before he started touching you. In the future, you can know that you're safe if he makes sure to wash his hands with soap and water before he touches your vagina, but I think you have little to worry about from this instance.

Your period is probably late because you are under so much stress, and because you've been worried that you may be pregnant. It is normal for women to miss periods occasionally due to stress, life changes, diet changes, medications, and many other factors. If you haven't had a period for three months in a row, then you may want to visit a health care provider to find out where it may have gone, and you can always take a home pregnancy test to rule out that possibility.

I hope that helps answer your question. Feel free to write us again if you need anything else. Take care, M. Scott Gross
