Question:
I have been off of birth control for about 4 months but my period has never been very regular since I came off of it. I'm not sure exactly what my typical cycle is but it has been 30 days since my last period began. I have not gotten my period yet. My breasts are very tender and sore and this is unusual for me during normal periods. 19 days ago I was fooling around with my boyfriend and we did not have sexual intercourse but his penis came in very close contact to my vagina. I am not sure if there was precum present or not. Today I took a home pregnancy test and it came back negative but I understand it may have been to early for me to take the test. Do you think I am safe and not pregnant? What if I don't get my period soon? Thanks for your help.

Darling, since your cycle is NOT regular it would be difficult for me to tell you whether or not you could be pregnant. Of course, the symptoms you described could be a result of pregnancy, but they also could be a result of your period coming - a double edged sword right? Why couldn't nature have given women distinct "I am pregnant" signs. Pre Ejaculate (Pre Cum) has been found to NOT cause pregnancy, even though many individuals are still teaching people that it does),so that should relax your heart a little bit. One can take a reliable home pregnancy the day after your period was missed, which generally means about 3 weeks after one last had sex. The chances are slim that if he didn't put his penis in you you could become pregnant, but I have heard/read that it happens. BUT, it is not likely. Remember, when in doubt, get a perscription for Emergency Contraception. It prevents a pregnacy from occuring if taken within 5 days after the "accident" happens. It does not END a pregnancy, it mearly STOPS a pregnancy from forming. Last thing, if you stress out about it, stress can dely the onset of your period. The body is very sensitive to stress, so try to relax or your period will come much later. Good Luck and thanks for writing in! Megan Andelloux
