Fluid from your penis during sexual excitement, but before you ejaculate or "cum" is absolutely normal. I'm glad you are interested in learning more about your body during sexual arousal. The more you understand about your own body and your partner(s) body, the better chance you have for good sex and good sexual health. Men vary in how quickly this fluid, called pre-seminal fluid or "precum," begins and in how much precum is released. Pre-seminal fluid is actually nature's way to make pregnancy more likely. Scientists think that the fluid you've seen has the ability to make the "environment" of the woman's vagina more friendly for sperm! A normal vagina will have traces of urine and other normal substances that can kill sperm, and reduce the chances of fertilizing a woman's egg. You should also know that precum contains some sperm, which is one of the reasons why "withdrawal" or pulling the penis out of the vagina before ejaculation to prevent pregnancy, is not a reliable form of birth control. Precum can also contain HIV or other STD if the man is infected. To prevent pregnancy and HIV/STD a condom must be on the penis before any penetration (for STD this includes vagina, mouth and anus). As birth control, a natural skin, latex or polyurethane plastic condom is effective; for HIV/STD prevention do not use natural skin because bacteria and virus of STD can penetrate and possibly cause infection. If you'd like to learn more about your body and male sexuality there are many good sources. One book I recommend often is "The New Male Sexuality" by Bernie Zilbergeld. Also see Safersex.org.
