Question:
I was just wondering if you could tel ma a technique or two that would help me last longer in bed. I heard that one method (masturbate until just prior to ejaculation then stop, and repeat one or two times), supposedly makes you last longer. I was wondering if you could confirm or deny his, and maybe give me a tip or two on how to improve

In your additional information you were telling me that you are between 18 and 20 years old and that you think this may be due to inexperience. You also said that it is not much of a problem, that your girlfriend still enjoys sex much and that you usually are able to last much longer the second time around. Everything sounds quite normal to me and I would not worry about anything at this time. Once you get more experienced you may find that you will automatically last longer from the beginning. However, one thing I do not want you to do is trying to distract yourself during intercourse thinking that this will make you last longer. Many men think that it will help them to last longer to for example think about baseball. They are wrong since distracting yourself actually has the opposite effect. It is much more important to focus on your sensations. Try to concentrate on the sensations in your penis and to monitor when you are getting close to ejaculating. At that time you can slow down the rhythm of thrusting a little which may extend the time until you ejaculate. Men who can control their ejaculation well usually have the ability to recognize when they are getting close. At that time they automatically change the rhythm of thrusting or the position they are in, thereby reducing the stimulation of the penis and extending the time to ejaculation. What you are mentioning is the start-stop technique to treat premature ejaculation (PE). In case you are interested you can either search www.SexualHealth.com for PE and this technique, or you can look at some of the questions and answers in the archive of the Q&A section on my website www.CvilleWellness.com. But I really do not think that you are having a serious problem at this time and there is a good chance that it will disappear altogether as time goes by. Best wishes, Annette Owens, MD PhD
