By most statistics, premature ejaculation is the most common complaint among men. The actual treatment is different for every man. It may be helpful for you to work with a qualified sex therapist or other health professional to examine this issue. Consider buying the classic video You Can Last Longer. This is an excellent video on this topic and is easily available from many outlets, such as Good Vibrations or the Sinclair Intimacy Institute. Some men like to take medication in hopes of forestalling ejaculation. There are several medications you can consider, and most of them are antidepressants. This works for some men, but not others and keep in mind that it is possible for the premature ejaculation to return after ceasing to take medication. Consider buying the recent book “Coping with Premature Ejaculation” by Michael Metz and Barry McCarthy. Finally, it will be important for you to re-evaluate what it means to be sexual and what it means to have successful, fulfilling sex. This is something that is best done with a sex therapist, who can also help you explore your actual sexual behaviors. For example, the missionary or man-on-top sexual position often leads to premature ejaculation for men and other sexual positions may be more conducive to forestalling ejaculation. Also, examining the “flow” of sexual behaviors can be helpful. In short, there are some options for self-help (e.g., the book and the video), but consider getting a complete evaluation and working with a sex therapist or other qualified health professional.
