Question:
Four days ago, my boyfriend and I were fooling around. We have never had sex and did not have sex that day either. However we were both naked and unprotected. During that time, his penis rubbed up against my vagina opening, but didn't enter. There were pre-ejaculatory fluids and he entered me with his fingers after touching those fluids. He never ejaculated. After this experience, we were careful to shower and clean ourselves. However, since then I have been feeling nauseous and experiencing pain in that area every single day. I'm absolutely paranoid that since this occurred during the middle of my cycle that I have a chance of becoming pregnant. Especially with the addition of nausea and pain that is occurring. Please can you tell me what are the chances of becoming pregnant from this. Thank you.

Hello and thank you for your question. You will probably be happy to know that your chances of getting pregnant from this event are pretty low. In order for pregnancy to occur, the man needs to ejaculate with his penis inside of, or very near, a woman's vagina. Now your boyfriend's pre-ejaculate (or pre-cum) may have had sperm in it, but only if he had ejaculated right before you began fooling around. This was also during the middle of your cycle which is typically a very fertile time for a woman, so I won't tell you that it is impossible for you to get pregnant, but I don't think that it is likely. The pain and nausea you are experiencing could be evidence of a more serious issue, but I would guess that more likely you feel that way because you know that you did something that was potentially dangerous. Not only could you get pregnant from something like that, but you can also trasmit sexually transmitted infections (STIs) from one person to another through pre-cum. You have a lot of safe ways of expressing sexual affection for each other, so make sure you take precautions to protect each other when you're being intimate together. Make sure that he washes his hands before he touches you if he's had semen or pre-cum on his hands, and make sure you wear a condom if and when you do decide to have intercourse. You can be safe and still be sexual, so take the time to take care of each other. Best wishes, M. Scott Gross
