Question:
Thank you for your response regarding peach colored bumps in my mouth and on the inside of my cheeks. Your response indicated that typically oral herpes lasts up to 3 weeks. However, I have been dealing with the irritation for over 5 weeks. It hasnt gotten worse but nor has it gotten better. Isn't that an unsually long time for oral herpes?

If this is your first outbreak, then first outbreaks tend to be longer and more severe than later ones. Also, given that you're HIV positive, your body may be having a tougher time overcoming this outbreak. Given your physician did not give you any medication to alleviate the symptoms, you may want to consider having your mouth/throat re-examined. Furthermore, to prevent the spread of STIs/HIV during sexual activity, it would be a good idea to use a latex condom or dental dam.Reviewed by: Patricia Fawver Ph.D. in Sexology
