Question:
If a man infected with HIV and I had unprotected sex but he pulled out before he came inside of me am I at risk for contracting HIV? What are the symptoms of HIV - is one of them being tired all the time - and how long do they take to appear?

Yes, you are at risk. If he is HIV-positive his pre-cum (pre-ejaculatory fluid) will have HIV in it. I think you are asking about symptoms to determine if you or he is infected. That won’t help because the symptoms of HIV/AIDS are so similar to the symptoms of many other illnesses. The only way to know if you are infected is to be tested for this virus.

The test will be useful only if you understand how it works - which helps you decide when to be tested. The test looks for the antibodies you produce in response to HIV infection, but it takes awhile for them to show up. For most people, it’s 3 to 6 months, but it’s technically possible for HIV antibodies to appear within 2 weeks of infection or later than 6 months.

I’m sorry you’re having this scare. Please, learn all you can about condom usage & how to begin discussions of safer sex with partners long before you’re in a sexual situation. Feel free to contact us again or get private answers anytime of day or night by phoning the National AIDS Hotline (800-342-AIDS). Good luck!
