Question:
Since as long as I can remember I've always had some light discharge, and I've noticed it more since I've started having sex.A few weeks ago my boyfriend performed oral sex on me for the first time.About a week after he had a high fever and was diagnosed with a "throat infection" (not strep). He's afraid whatever discharge I had caused it.Can normal discharge do that? And since he did get sick does that mean the discharge is not normal?

As you say, many women have a small amount of vaginal discharge, which doesn't smell or cause any symptoms. It's just there. If the discharge changes from the way it used to be, it's worthwhile to have a gynecologist check a culture on you to see if there's anything going on. As to whether your boyfriend could have gotten a high fever from oral sex if you had a vaginal infection, it is hard to answer that. Sore throats are usually caused by flu and cold viruses and other organisms, so it may have just been a coincidence that his sore throat started a week after you had oral sex. Usually during oral sex, your clitoris is stimulated by the partner's tongue and whatever is up inside the vagina is not likely to be involved, but I can't tell you this for sure. There are some sexually transmitted infections that can infect the throat, so you may want to both check with your medical practitioners to test for these infections. Make sure you have a complete gynecologic exam with cervical and vaginal cultures.
