Question:
Hi, recently my periods tend to be a day late for the late 3 months. the most recent one has been abnormally light, usually i am heavy for 2 days out of the 4 or 5 that i menstruate. I am currently taking Diane 35 and have been for the last 2 years. when I have sex with my boyfriend, he uses a condom. I have heard that eventhough you get your period, there is a possibility that you could still be pregnant...is this true? What could be another reason for this to be happening?

Hi and thanks for your question. Natural changes in your body due to age, a change in diet, or some other change in lifestyle (exercise, consumption of alcohol) can affect many of your body's mechanisms including menstruation. In fact, most women who consider themselves to have regular periods are not as regular as a swiss made watch. Although it is true that some pregnant women can experience what is known as breakthrough bleeding or spotting early in pregnancy, it sounds more like you are experiencing a full period. Unless there is some kind of a complication, a pregnant woman would not have that kind of a menstrual flow.
Furthermore, if you and your boyfriend are using condoms correctly every time you have intercourse together and there hasn't been a condom break, then the chances of you actually being pregnant are very, very slim to none. If you are still concerned about the changes in your mentrual flow then you should make an appointment to talk to your doctor or gynecologist about it and also ask about how medication you take (including birth control) can affect your period.
I hope that this has been helpful to you. Take care,
