Question:
I can no longer have children. Is there some way for me to relieve my frustrations? I am trying to keep busy and keep my thoughts on constructive things.

It's normal to want to have kids, so if you can't have them, it's a true emotional loss. It's important that you grieve for it and not try to push it aside by staying busy with other things. Acknowledge your loss, then move on from there. There are many options for having children in your life. Adoption (including single-parent adoption), step-parenting, becoming close to young relatives or being a committed godparent are all possibilities. There are more options in the community, such as mentoring a school child or joining Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Most of us, given the insight and desire, have many opportunities to enrich our relationships with the children already around us. If this issue remains of concern to you, I encourage you to talk with a qualified counselor. Don't put this off --taking care of self is always important. Patti McNeff
