Unless the nipples are bit hard, sucking on them should not cause any damage to the breasts. Many women nurse their babies daily for extended periods without harm. And babies suck hard. Having the sexual partner suck on the breasts (whether or not the woman has had a baby) is fine. In fact, many women enjoy having their nipples stimulated orally, and many people enjoy caressing their partner’s nipples. When nipples are sucked on, the hormone oxytocin is released from the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. This is particularly useful immediately after labor, since this hormone contracts the uterus, which helps to stop the bleeding after the delivery. Many (but not all) women get sexually aroused, when their nipples are sucked on. Oxytocin may be involved in this process, but many couples also enjoy the closeness that this form for caressing brings. I definitely recommend breast caressing and stimulation (manually, orally, or otherwise) during foreplay and during sexual activity if both partners enjoy it. Sincerely, Annette Owens, MD PhD
