'Masturbation' means that you touch and stimulate your own genitals. A man typically masturbates by stroking his penis with one or both hands, rhythmically back and forth. A lubricant, such as KY-jelly or Astroglide, which you can buy over-the-counter may feel good. But there is really not one specific way to do it. Whatever feels good to you is fine. Some men and women like rubbing their genitals against something like a towel or a pillow. You can do it lying down, sitting, standing, whatever you like. For your information, women typically masturbate by gently stroking their clitoris. It varies how much pressure they need to apply for it to feel good. Everyone is different and there is really no "right" way to masturbate. Again, whatever feels good is fine. Some people use tools as vibrators, dildos, etc. when they masturbate. And many look at visual material, which arouses them while they masturbate. It is important to know that many people do masturbate on a regular base. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with giving yourself pleasure, and I share this view with many health professionals in our Western culture. Finally, you do not have to have a certain age to be allowed to masturbate. Young children often touch their own genitals, because they realize that it feels good. Unfortunately, some children are told not to touch "down there" and they get the message that masturbation is wrong. Masturbation is a private act, but it is completely fine to do it. Sexual partners who are comfortable with each other may masturbate in each other's presence, and this is perfectly fine to do as well. I hope that I have answered your question. Otherwise, please do not hesitate to ask again. Sincerely, Annette Owens, MD PhD
