This is a good question. It takes several days to two weeks for the body to register either in the blood or urine that a pregnancy may be developing. After the sperm and egg unite, it will be 48 hours before implantation in the uterus. Once that happens chemicals produced by the developing embryo travel around the body and can be found first through a blood test. Eventually the hormones will show up in the urine as well.
You can test for these by using a pregnancy test that is purchased in a store but you must follow the directions carefully. Doctors and Planned Parenthood facilities can also check urine for pregnancy. The only certain way to know that a pregnancy is developing is through an ultra sound, but that can only happen after the embryo is developing.
If a woman thinks that she may be pregnant just because of the timing of the intercourse she can get Emergency Contraception and must take it within 72 hours of the unplanned/unprepared intercourse if she does not want a pregnancy. She can ask a doctor for EC and in some states get it from a pharmacy.
I hope this helps answer your question. If you have more questions that I did not answer or want to just ask about other topics please feel free to write again. Reviewed by: Scott Gross M. Ed.
